The Best Homemade Carpet Cleaner
I have used this homemade alternative to store bought for all my carpet shampooing needs. It works way better than its ulterior store solutions and also holds less toxic ingredients than most store bought shampoos and cleaners! It’s a win win for me! Let’s get into the ingredients:
Ingredients
I also recommend this specific carpet shampooer. I have bought cheaper brands before and had the machine break upon arrival. Paying for quality might be expensive now but in the long run you will thank yourself.

With these four ingredients your carpet will thank you- but before cleaning the whole carpet it is always recommended to spot test first on a small section to make sure your carpet takes to the cleaners. This being a fairly natural mixture I don’t see large problems occurring but you always want to be safer than sorry! With that done- get ready for clean carpets with this awesome homemade carpet cleaner!
Instructions
1.) First, add one or two drop of laundry detergent and a table spoon of Oxiclean into the clean water tank of your carpet shampooer. Fill the rest with water and shampoo the whole carpet once over with this solution.
2.) Next, once you are done with step one go over your carpet again with once teaspoon of baking soda and one teaspoon of OxiClean in the fresh water tank as many times as is necessary. I usually do two to ensure the stains and smell lift as well as the laundry soap. You can also add less than I recommend here- especially if you have to go over it a few times.
3.) Fill the fresh tank once more with a few lemon drops (and a small amount of baking soda if you want to keep the cleaning properties in the solution). Fill the rest with water and go over the whole floor once more with this solution.
4.) Once you are done with this you can go along with an empty fresh water tank or a solution of only water to suck up any excess water. I also do this to leave a pattern on my carpet going in the same direction around the whole room. It makes the room look extremely nice in my opinion to have straight lines and carpet in the same direction. If you do fill the fresh water tank with just water it would be to ensure you get all the soap and dirt out of your floor once more. Not completely necessary but I always do this. I spray the water on my way up the carpet, stop, and suck up the excess water on my way backwards along the same piece of carpet.
5.) After this you can leave it to dry or you can place a fan or heater. This is what I do so the water isn’t sitting in my carpet or seeping through for too long.
