Why Should We Say No to Most Store-Bought Cleaners?
From air pollution to skin irritation, there are a multitude of risks associated with the toxic chemicals found in store-bought cleaners. Even our favorite brands that claim the title ‘non toxic’ are often greenwashing.
All of these cleaners and more have been known to cause environmental harm, hormonal issues, pose the risk of poison in our homes, and can induce severe allergic reactions.
Many people believe that the effects of these chemicals go much deeper, though not many studies have been done to prove all the reactions and effects of toxic cleaners.
With the efficiency of non toxic products being just as good, if not better, it is a no-brainer to make the switch. So without further ado, here are my favorite non toxic cleaners, along with my easy, go-to recipe to make your own!
Non Toxic Cleaning Products
1.) KOALA ECO
Koala Eco is a non toxic, family owned business. They have everything from veggie washes to floor cleaners. From window cleaners to dish soaps, Koala Eco has all you need when it comes to the cleanliness of your home.
Each product not only smells so beautiful and fresh, but is one product on the market that you can trust by its smell.
The affordability of Koala Eco’s non toxic cleaning products is extremely incredible. If you are looking for quality at a lower price, you cannot go wrong with Koala Eco. The last added benefit is the packaging, which is aesthetic enough that you want to show off in your cleaning caddy and on the corner of your sink.
2.) ROWE CASA ORGANICS
If you are looking for a product line that will show up as 100% non toxic no matter who you ask, Rowe Casa Organics is where you should start and end your search.
There is not one toxic mark on the ingredient list on any of their multitude of products.
The diversity of the non toxic products Rowe Casa Organics supplies is just as incredible as their ingredient list. If you are in need of a non toxic hair care routine, sleep routine, cleaning routine, or SPF replacement, they have it all.
Rowe Casa Organics can be seen as more expensive, though if you are concerned about your health and well-being you won’t blink an eye at the price for the quality this company provides.
Many of their products come in reusable and glass jars, which highlights the company’s quality on the exterior as well. Rowe Casa Organics is yet another non toxic brand that you will want to display!
3.) YOUNG LIVING
My final favorite in this list of non toxic cleaning product companies is Young Living.
I appreciate this company over many other similar brands because, though often seen as an MLM (Multi-Level Marketing), there is never a requirement to make a purchase every month. Unlike many other companies’ marketers, my Young Living consultant never asks me to make another purchase. This helps me to feel less stressed when shopping, which will always bring me back!
Along with the incredible setup of the Young Living operation, I have not found more effective cleaners for hard scrubbing jobs that aren’t filled with bleach and other abrasive toxins. Each product is specifically filled with 100% essential oils for cleaning and pleasant scents. I never get tired of how fresh my home smells after cleaning with their Thieves spray!
Outside the mirrored business model of the common MLM style, the backstory of this company has made people shy away from purchasing from Young Living. There are often ups and downs to each of these companies, and I am not here to hide them. Though I am not entirely sure of all the details, I can definitely agree that there are some crazy rumors around the founding of this company.
Making Non Toxic Cleaning Products at Home
Purchasing non toxic is not the only way to ensure you have a clean and healthy home environment! There are very simple and easy recipes for homemade cleaners that are both safe and effective. This DIY non toxic cleaner has been my favorite for years.
Here’s a simple and effective recipe for a non-toxic, all-purpose homemade cleaner:
Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner
Ingredients:
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup distilled water
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 10-15 drops of essential oil (optional, for fragrance and added cleaning power; lemon, lavender, or tea tree oil are great choices)
- A spray bottle (preferably glass)
Instructions:
- Mix the Ingredients: Start by pouring 1 cup of distilled water into the spray bottle. Add 1 cup of white vinegar.
- Add Baking Soda: Slowly add 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Be cautious, as it will fizz when it comes into contact with the vinegar.
- Essential Oils: If you want to add a pleasant scent and enhance the cleaner’s properties, add 10-15 drops of your chosen essential oil(s).
- Shake Well: Secure the spray bottle’s lid and gently shake the bottle to mix all the ingredients thoroughly.
- Use: Spray directly onto surfaces such as countertops, sinks, or bathroom tiles. Wipe with a clean cloth or sponge.
Notes:
- This cleaner is safe for most surfaces, including glass, ceramic, and stainless steel. However, avoid using it on natural stone surfaces like granite or marble, as the vinegar can etch the stone.
- For tougher stains or areas needing extra scrubbing power, sprinkle a little extra baking soda on the surface before spraying the cleaner.
This homemade cleaner is effective, economical, and safe for both your home and the environment, offering a great alternative to chemical-laden commercial cleaners.
