Let’s get right into this list of thirteen must have items when it comes to your backyard garden this year, specifically for fruits and vegetables! These items range from useful and decorative, practical and organizational! All items I wouldn’t want to live without to have a super bountiful and practical garden for my use!
1.) Metal Raised Beds
Using Metal isn’t just for the modern looks, these last a lifetime compared to wooden raised beds. Having raised beds is so helpful for the flourishing of your garden. It’s easier to enhance the soil, insulates the vegetables better than planting directly into the ground and often wards off pests and weeds better than planting without a raised bed. At the same time they also keep your backyard beautifully decorated! (Click here for the Amazon link)
2.) Plant Cages
To protect your backyard vegetable garden trying to have a few cages on hand is the smartest way to go. Especially if you live in an area with any wildlife or if you own dogs or cats that may get into your garden space.
3.) A Good Compost
There is specific composts and fertilizers I just don’t buy into anymore. For thousands of years we went without most of these soil bags and sprays from the stores. I prefer to know my soil is made from natural and simple ingredients without just being dirt. Now if you don’t have accessibility to natural products yourself like manure or compost there is plenty of products online, like this one, that are full of the good stuff that makes for healthy and thriving vegetables.
4.) Quality Garden Clippers
They do not have to be super fancy as long as they are good quality. The ones I own (and have for a very long time) are a very simple pair but the high ratings and “Amazon’s Choice” label are not for not reason. These are good clippers to have, every gardener needs a pair- these are it!
5.) Soaker Hose
Lot’s of plants and vegetables actually prefer to not be soaked with water (like tomatoes, for example). For most of my plants and garden beds I use soaker hoses. This way I have a way to water them that is primarily for the garden. This means I set it up once and never move it until the season is over. Soaker hoses allow you to still be in the garden working while watering, and they ensure your tomatoes don’t split. It’s good to water many different ways- and I often do water with a sprinkler as well- but this will remain a top favorite for me.
6.) Small Shovels & Tool Sets
Another backyard vegetable garden must have! These tools are perfect for a backyard garden. Having miniature tools is great when it comes to weeding, transplanting, digging in pots and raised beds, the list goes on.
7.) A Kneeling Pad or Stool
Any item that allows ease to your joints, bones and body in general is a must have for gardening- especially if you take gardening seriously, spend lots of time in it or depend on it. You want to make sure the hours you space away in that space aren’t hurting you. (Or you can buy a set with both!)
8.) Full Sized Shovel
Another good one- every gardener needs to have a full sized shovel. Specifically one that curves in at the ends and is very sturdy. This makes the process of transplanting larger items capable! Because we won’t always have small pots and plants to put in the soil, anything like a blueberry bush needs to be transplanted by a large shovel. It also helps when you buy bulk soil or bark dust to move it where you want!
9.) Hanging Baskets
This sounds extremely plain, or strange but if you are growing a backyard vegetable garden space might not be your friend! It’s always a good idea to buy hanging baskets and plant whatever you can in them eat year. Reusing them every year makes them well worth the original purchase and they pay for themselves fast!
10.) Quality WheelBarrow
Another obvious need is a good wheelbarrow. To fill with pulled weeds, bark dust, or large plants! Having a wheelbarrow is a must. This one has four wheels which is so convenient- especially for those who don’t want to or can’t do heavy lifting.
11.) Garden Tiller
It’s really important to till your soil! There is two I recommend: one is an electric garden tiller and the second one is what I use for garden beds, a manual tiller.
12.) Triangle Warren Hoe
A tool like this is super useful for manual tilling and creating straight rows to plant seeds directly into the soil. They are also useful when it comes to weeding a large ground garden. I like this one because it’s sort of like a two in one! If you use the side it acts similarly to regular hoes which don’t have a tip but are straight across. So you can either use the tip of the hoe or the side for different things!
13.) Watering Can
This is another simple one, but y’all these are must have items for your backyard vegetable garden endeavors!
